Indigenous Rematriation Infographic
About
Indigenous rematriation is vital to restoring land, culture, and sovereignty to Native communities who have been historically displaced. It not only addresses centuries of harm but also ensures that traditional ecological knowledge and spiritual stewardship can thrive for future generations.
Mission
The design approach emphasizes storytelling, connection, cultural respect, and urgency. I used engaging earth tones and flowing shapes to symbolize the cleansing and life-giving element of water, while integrating bold type for key statistics to ensure accessibility. The collage features the fireweed plant, buffalo, willow trees, and dancer to symbolize resiliency and rebirth. The layout balances storytelling with data visualization, placing dishonorable American history at the bottom and illustrating upward growth with reconnection to the land that honors indigenous communities around the world. A fun challenge was finding a way to communicate large data sets into easy-to-understand systems. My goal was to create a piece that gives recognition to the cascading impacts from the past on communities today and shows benefits to giving land back to natives that could persuade finance-focused skeptics. This infographic reached the longlist for the Information is Beautiful Awards.
